A South African court has ordered a halt to impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the theft of more than $580,000 in cash from his farm in 2020.

The Western Cape High Court’s Friday judgment does not stop the impeachment committee from continuing other preparatory work, according to a report by the AP News.
Lawmakers began impeachment proceedings in June after a parliamentary report concluded Ramaphosa had a case to answer, including why large sums were kept in a sofa at his farm and why he did not immediately report the theft.
Ramaphosa is challenging the report in court and had sought a halt to proceedings until the review is complete. His office said he welcomed the ruling and would “cooperate with and abide by processes of accountability.”
The Constitutional Court had earlier ruled the report valid. Political parties said they would study Friday’s judgment before deciding whether to appeal.
