The US has imposed a 12.5% tariff on Nigerian imports, citing the country’s failure to effectively ban goods produced with forced labour.

The tariff, announced by the US Trade Representative on Thursday, affects 60 economies deemed to have inadequate forced-labour import bans, according to Punch. Countries like India, Malaysia, Mexico, and the UK secured a lower 10% rate after adopting or pledging such bans. The measure follows Section 301 investigations that included over 1,600 submissions and consultations with 45 governments.
USTR chief Jamieson Greer said the move aims to push trading partners toward stronger forced-labour enforcement, noting the US has maintained its own import ban for nearly a century.
