Fulani militants remain worst perpetrators of Christian genocide in Nigeria – US lawmaker

US Congressman Riley Moore has renewed international pressure on Nigeria over violence against Christians, alleging that Fulani militants remain the largest perpetrators of anti-Christian attacks in the country and calling for urgent action to stop the killing in the Middle Belt — even as he credited the Trump administration with making historic progress against Boko Haram and ISWAP.

The Trump administration may have dealt significant blows to Boko Haram and ISWAP — but US Congressman Riley Moore says the bloodshed in Nigeria’s Middle Belt is far from over.

In a post on his X account on Wednesday,as reported by The Sun, Moore — who has spent years investigating what he describes as the genocide of Christians in Nigeria — singled out Fulani militants as the primary threat to Christian communities across the country, shifting international focus beyond the jihadist groups that have dominated security discourse.

“As I have been saying since I started investigating the genocide against Christians in Nigeria, Fulani militants are by far the largest perpetrators of violence against Christians in Nigeria,” Moore stated.

He acknowledged recent US counterterrorism gains but insisted they were insufficient. “The Trump Administration has made historic progress against Boko Haram and ISWAP, but we must also stop the killing in the Middle Belt at the hands of the Fulani if we want to ensure our brothers and sisters in Christ are safe to live and worship without being murdered,” he said.

Moore’s remarks directly reference the recurring cycle of violence across Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa and parts of Southern Kaduna, where suspected Fulani herdsmen have been blamed for hundreds of deaths, the destruction of homes and churches and the displacement of thousands of residents over the past decade.

The crisis in Nigeria’s Middle Belt is complex — rooted in overlapping grievances over land, grazing routes, climate-induced migration, ethnic rivalry and criminal activity. However, Christian leaders and international advocacy groups have consistently argued that many of the attacks are deliberately targeted at Christian farming communities.

Despite repeated military operations and government assurances, deadly attacks have continued across multiple states, with accountability for perpetrators remaining largely elusive.

Moore’s latest intervention is expected to intensify international scrutiny of the Federal Government’s security response in the Middle Belt region.
