US TROOPS EXIT NIGERIA
The United States has withdrawn most of the troops it deployed to Nigeria earlier this year to support counter-insurgency operations against Islamic State-linked militants.
According to the BBC, the joint US-Nigerian mission in the Lake Chad Basin began in December and included military strikes and the deployment of about 200 American soldiers. The operation reportedly led to the killing of senior Islamic State leader Abu-Bilal al-Minuki.
US Air Forces Africa Commander General Dagvin Anderson said the mission significantly weakened Islamic State’s leadership and disrupted its command network.
Nigeria’s military said the troop withdrawal would not affect ongoing operations, noting that intelligence-sharing between both countries would continue.
