FG replaces NYSC khaki with Adire fabric

The Federal Government has announced that the NYSC’s traditional khaki uniform will be replaced with locally-produced Adire fabric as part of reforms aimed at boosting Nigeria’s textile industry.

The Federal Government has announced that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will replace its traditional khaki uniform with Adire fabric, as part of ongoing reforms to the scheme.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made the disclosure on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, describing the move as part of broader government efforts to strengthen local production and ensure public spending directly benefits Nigeria’s economy.

According to Olawande, the new uniform will be sourced locally, noting that Adire is already widely produced across the country. “It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” he said.

The minister explained that the switch is designed to boost indigenous industries — particularly Nigeria’s textile sector — while promoting local craftsmanship through government-backed demand.

Beyond the uniform overhaul, Olawande also revealed that the Federal Government is restructuring the NYSC posting system, with plans to deploy corps members based on their professional backgrounds and areas of study, rather than the current system.
