NIGERIAN NUN RELEASED
A US-based Nigerian Catholic nun, Sister Leticia Ugboaja, has been released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody after she was arrested while walking to church in McAllen, Texas, according to the The PUNCH.
Ugboaja, 56, a member of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy, was detained on Sunday while heading to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church near the US-Mexico border for Mass.
The case drew attention after the church posted about her arrest, prompting intervention by South Texas lawmakers, including Republican Representative Monica De La Cruz and Democratic Representative Henry Cuellar.
Diocese officials said Ugboaja also volunteers as a Communion minister and works as a registered nurse. ICE had not responded to requests for comment.
