Gunmen kill 18 farmers in Plateau village

Gunmen launched a deadly midnight attack on Kawel village in Bokkos LGA, Plateau State, killing at least 18 farmers and injuring several others in what a local youth leader described as completely unprovoked.

It was supposed to be a quiet Sunday night. Instead, Kawel village in Mushere District, Bokkos LGA, Plateau State, turned into a bloodbath.

According to Daily Trust, gunmen stormed the farming community around 11:30 p.m., opening fire on residents and shooting over 20 people. By morning, 18 were confirmed dead.

Christopher Luka, Bokkos Youth Leader, told Daily Trust how the horror unfolded in real time.

“A youth leader called around 12 a.m. that gunmen attacked the community and shot over 20 people, so 18 were confirmed dead,” Luka said.

He immediately alerted security personnel. “I called the security and they confirmed to me that they had been alerted and were on their way to the attacked community,” he added.

What makes this worse? It happened less than five days after District Head of Gwande, Saf Samuel Alaket, was ambushed and killed along the Sha District axis — returning home from a traditional council meeting.

Luka described Sunday’s attack as unprovoked and is demanding swift security intervention before the violence spirals further out of control.

Plateau State is bleeding. The question is — who stops it?
