ECOWAS has secured the release of five Nigerian onion trucks detained in Ghana, averting a diplomatic row between the two countries.

The trucks, held since Tuesday at Kotoku Market by a traders’ group, were released and allowed to offload on Friday, according to the Regional Observatory of Onion in West and Central Africa (ORO/WCA), as reported by Vanguard. ORO president Aliyu Maitasamu credited ECOWAS, along with Nigerian and Ghanaian trade ministries, for resolving the dispute, noting Nigeria exports about 16 truckloads of onions to Ghana weekly.
While welcoming the resolution, ORO warned the underlying causes of recurring disruptions remain unresolved, urging ECOWAS to convene a structured dialogue involving Nigeria, Ghana, and Niger to establish a lasting regional trade framework.
