U.S. President Donald Trump claimed American forces had “totally obliterated” military targets on Iran’s strategic Kharg Island while warning Tehran against interfering with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Military installations on Kharg Island, which processes about 90 per cent of Iran’s crude exports, have been “totally obliterated,” according to Donald Trump. The U.S. leader made the claim in a post on his Truth Social platform, saying the strikes were carried out by United States Central Command in what he described as “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East.”
Trump said the airstrikes had “totally obliterated every military target” on the island, which he described as “Iran’s crown jewel.” He wrote: “Our Weapons are the most powerful and sophisticated that the World has ever known but, for reasons of decency, I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island. However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.”
Hours after the statement, Iranian authorities warned they would retaliate if their energy facilities were attacked, vowing to “reduce to ashes” energy resources belonging to U.S. allies. Kharg Island, a coral formation located about 15 miles off Iran’s coastline in the Persian Gulf, is often referred to as a heavily guarded “Forbidden Island” due to strict military monitoring and serves as the primary export terminal for most of the country’s oil shipments.
