The application window, as seen by PUNCH Online on Monday, opened June 15 and will close on June 30, 2026, according to a notice published by the US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria.
As reported by The Punch, the programme — run through the Public Diplomacy Section of the US Mission — isn’t your typical scholarship. Rather than covering tuition, it covers the often-expensive costs of applying to American universities, including standardised test fees, university application fees, visa expenses, travel and other pre-admission costs. Since its launch in 2004, the programme has helped hundreds of Nigerian students gain admission with full financial aid to some of the most prestigious universities in North America.
The 2026 edition carries a fresh badge. The cohort is tied to the Freedom 250 celebration, marking 250 years of American leadership, innovation and democratic values, with the programme aiming to prepare globally competitive talents aligned with US economic and strategic interests.
Priority will be given to students in STEM fields, though the programme is open to high achievers with strong leadership records across all disciplines. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and clear intent to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies in the United States.
