Senate urges FG to declare national emergency on cancer

The Senate has urged the Federal Government to declare cancer a national emergency amid rising costs, funding gaps and insecurity affecting patient access to care.

The Senate has called on the Federal Government to declare a national emergency on cancer, citing rising treatment costs and insecurity hindering access to care. Chairman of the Senate Committee on Primary Health and Communicable Diseases, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, made the appeal at a World Cancer Day symposium in Abuja.

“We need the government to do more… I really want to call for cancer treatment to be made a national emergency,” Ohuabunwa said, noting challenges faced by patients in conflict-prone areas. Imo First Lady Chioma Uzodinma also highlighted funding gaps, saying collaborations have expanded to boost treatment and advocacy.
