The Nigerian Bar Association criticised Omoyele Sowore’s conduct at the Federal High Court in Abuja, saying courtrooms must not be used for publicity or advocacy theatrics.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has criticised activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore over his conduct at the Federal High Court, Abuja, describing the incident as a breach of courtroom etiquette. The development followed a confrontation between Sowore and Senior Advocate of Nigeria Musibau Adetunbi after the activist attempted to address journalists inside the courtroom.
During the exchange, Sowore pushed back at Adetunbi, saying, “You’re intimidating me and insulting my intelligence because you’re introducing yourself to me as a SAN. I also have my own SANs.” In a statement signed by NBA president Afam Osigwe, the association acknowledged that courtrooms are open to the public but must operate with order, discipline, and respect for judicial authority.
“It is against this background that the Nigerian Bar Association views with grave concern the incident involving Mr Omoyele Sowore,” the statement said, adding that turning courtrooms into platforms for “publicity, advocacy theatrics, or confrontation is unacceptable.” The NBA also called on court authorities to ensure courtrooms remain protected spaces for the orderly administration of justice.
