Lagos says motorists will soon be able to choose between a federal driver’s licence and a new state-issued version aimed at improving road safety and reducing delays in documentation processes.
The Lagos State Government has concluded plans to introduce its own driver’s licence in collaboration with the Federal Government as part of efforts to improve road safety and service delivery across the state.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s third year in his second term. Osiyemi said the new licence would become operational within weeks and would complement the existing federal driver’s licence currently in use nationwide. According to him, motorists would be allowed to choose between the federal licence and the Lagos-issued version under an arrangement with relevant federal authorities.
He explained that the initiative was designed to simplify documentation processes, reduce waiting time for applicants and strengthen traffic administration in the state. “The new licensing framework will improve operational efficiency, support digital monitoring and advance transportation reforms targeted at safer and more organised road usage statewide,” Osiyemi said.
