Kayode Are assumes office as Nigeria’s ambassador to US

Former DSS Director-General Kayode Are has officially begun his role as Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States after presenting his letter of credence to President Donald Trump at the White House.

Former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Kayode Are, has formally assumed office as Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States after presenting his letter of credence to US President Donald Trump at the White House.

Are officially began his diplomatic assignment on Thursday, marking the start of his tenure as Nigeria’s envoy to Washington.

His appointment followed his nomination by President Bola Tinubu in November 2025 as part of a list of ambassadorial nominees forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

Are, an indigene of Ogun State, was among three non-career ambassadorial nominees submitted shortly after Tinubu’s initial list of 32 candidates.

The Senate later confirmed 64 ambassadorial nominees in December 2025, comprising 34 career diplomats and 30 non-career appointees.

Tinubu subsequently approved Are’s deployment to the United States in January 2026.

The new ambassador is expected to strengthen diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the US during his tenure.
