INEC ends voter registration today, ignores extension call

INEC is closing its Continuous Voter Registration exercise today despite demands from opposition parties and civil society groups for more time ahead of the 2027 polls.

INEC Shuts Voter Registration Today Despite Opposition Pushback

The Independent National Electoral Commission is standing firm on ending the Continuous Voter Registration exercise today, brushing aside pressure from opposition parties and CSOs who fear millions of Nigerians could be locked out of the 2027 vote, Sunday PUNCH reports. Centres will stay open from 9am to 3pm, with INEC declaring on X: “Your future won’t wait. Neither should you.”

National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna told the paper there would be “no extension,” citing the need to clean data and print PVCs. INEC says it has recorded 2.9 million registrants in Phase III alone, with youths and women dominating the figures.

But the ADC, LP and PDP factions insist the process should stay open, while Yiaga Africa’s Samson Itodo backed INEC’s adherence to its published timetable.
