Gunmen kill 10 in attack on farming settlements in Nigeria’s northwest, residents say

Heavily armed bandits raided rural farming settlements in Katsina State, Nigeria, killing 10 residents, burning properties, and stealing livestock while the communities were left vulnerable during a local market day.

Heavily armed bandits attacked farming settlements in the Guga community of Katsina State, Nigeria, on Sunday, killing at least 10 people, including women and children. The gunmen invaded the vulnerable rural settlements of Gidan Sarkin Noma and Gidan Wawu at approximately 4:00 p.m. while many residents were away at a nearby market. In addition to the killings, the attackers looted livestock, destroyed property, and burned down homes.

Local survivor Sale Musa detailed the horror of the raid to reporters. “Yesterday evening, heavily armed bandits with sophisticated weapons attacked the farming settlements … After opening fire, they captured 10 people, including a pregnant woman, and killed all of them,” Musa said.

The assault highlights the ongoing surge of violence in northwest Nigeria, where armed groups routinely target remote communities with minimal security. While Katsina police have not yet commented on the tragedy, the wider region remains plagued by volatile insecurity, contrasting with the northeast, where joint operations have intensified against Islamic State targets.
