Fulani herders not criminals, Sultan vows to help flush out bandits

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, says Fulani herders shouldn’t be blamed for banditry and kidnapping, and has pledged their full cooperation with security agencies to root out criminals.

Sultan: Fulani Herders Not Criminals, Ready to Flush Out Bandits

Enough with the labels, says the Sultan. Speaking per Tribune Online at MACBAN’s 2026 National Conference in Abuja, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III urged Nigerians to stop calling criminals “Fulani herdsmen,” insisting kidnappers and terrorists should simply be called criminals, regardless of ethnicity.

The Sultan pledged that Fulani communities are “100 per cent ready” to help security agencies flush out bad actors from their settlements. He also praised President Tinubu for creating the Livestock Ministry.

MACBAN president Baba Othman Ngelzarma echoed the message, condemning banditry and cattle rustling while calling for climate-smart livestock investment. Livestock Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha announced 20 new veterinary hospitals and a digital animal ID scheme to curb rustling nationwide.
