From critic to cheerleader: U.S. Congressman hails Tinubu, says state police will protect persecuted Christians

U.S. Congressman Riley Moore has praised the Nigerian Senate’s passage of the state police bill, framing it as a critical step toward ending what he describes as the genocide and persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Washington’s most vocal critic of Nigeria’s security failures is — for once — clapping.

U.S. Congressman Riley Moore, who has spent months hammering the Tinubu administration over alleged Christian persecution, is welcoming Nigeria’s Senate with open arms after lawmakers passed a landmark bill on Wednesday to establish state-level police forces across the federation.

“I’m encouraged to see Nigeria’s Senate approve legislation to establish state-level police forces — a reform I’ve called for publicly and privately since I first started investigating the genocide against Christians in Nigeria,” Moore posted on X, as reported by Gazette NGR.

For Moore, this isn’t just a policing reform — it’s personal. The congressman has long argued that over-centralised security structures in Abuja leave vulnerable communities, particularly Christians in Nigeria’s Middle Belt and north, dangerously exposed.

“I can’t stress how critical this law that will empower states to protect their own citizens and reduce dependence on decision makers in Abuja is to the effort to defend persecuted Christians and address insecurity,” he added.

In a notable shift of tone, Moore even extended an olive branch to President Tinubu. “President Tinubu deserves credit for pushing it forward,” he said — remarkable praise from a lawmaker who previously accused the administration of splashing millions lobbying U.S. Congress while ignoring Christian killings at home.

The bill still needs ratification from two-thirds of Nigeria’s states before it takes effect. The finish line is close — but not yet crossed.
