Police have arrested a Lagos man accused of threatening and intimidating his widowed daughter-in-law in a bid to seize her late husband’s property.
Father-In-Law Arrested For Threatening, Forcing Widow Out Of Home Days After Husband’s Death
Police have arrested a man accused of threatening and intimidating his daughter-in-law following her husband’s death in Ikorodu, Lagos State, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said in a statement Wednesday, according to PUNCH.
The agency said it was alerted Tuesday to viral claims that the widow, identified as Tosin, faced threats to her life, physical assault and an attempt to seize her husband’s property. She had also reported the matter to the Owutu Police Division, and officers confirmed the suspect’s arrest as investigations continue.
Lawyers under the Project Protect Widows Initiative said Tosin was forced out of her matrimonial home with her children just eight days after her husband’s death, allegedly by her father-in-law, with the deceased’s brother and his wife also implicated in efforts to sell off his belongings and vehicles.
The legal team insisted Tosin remains the deceased’s legally married wife with full rights to his estate, warning that any property illegally taken would be “pursued and recovered through the law.”
