Drone strikes kill 10 at wedding gathering in Mali

A Malian military drone strike mistakenly targeted a motorbike procession in the Tene area, killing at least 10 civilians who were gathering to prepare for a traditional mass wedding.

Malian army drone strikes killed at least 10 civilians on Sunday in the Tene area near San as villagers prepared for a traditional mass wedding. A security source reported that the military drones targeted a procession of motorbikes following one another, noting that the movement “certainly” drew the attention of the military. Commenting on the sudden tragedy, a local resident stated anonymously, “What was supposed to be a moment of joy in the village turned into immense sorrow.”

In a separate statement, the Malian military did not address the civilian casualties but confirmed that offensive air missions had targeted terrorist regrouping points 55 kilometers south of Aguelhok. The military reported that a series of precision strikes “neutralised” several terrorists and “completely destroyed their logistics.”

The deadly incident occurs amid severely escalating conflict across Mali. The nation has faced heightened instability following major rebel attacks in April, which resulted in the closure of the main airport and the assassination of the country’s defense minister.
