Behind the beauty: Ladies share hidden pain of big boobs

For many women with fuller busts, finding well-fitting plus-size bras remains a challenge, often resulting in discomfort and forcing them to cope with chronic back and shoulder pain, poor posture, and long-term musculoskeletal issues that interfere with daily activities and overall quality of life. Yet many lingerie brands continue to offer limited or poorly designed options, prioritising aesthetics over function. CHIJIOKE IREMEKA explores the urgent need for inclusive, supportive, and body-conscious designs that safeguard health while celebrating natural curves

For Comfort Agiri, getting dressed is never just about picking an outfit; it begins with a daily negotiation between comfort, support, and what’s available on store shelves.

“The fashion industry doesn’t allow us to enjoy our big boobs the way we’d like. Wearing the wrong bra causes back pain and discomfort. I find myself slouching or constantly adjusting, which adds tension to my neck and shoulders,” she said.

Bras in larger sizes also carry higher price tags, further complicating access.

“It’s frustrating. You struggle to find options, and when you finally do, they’re expensive, or sometimes only available in second-hand,” she lamented.

For Agiri, the issue goes beyond personal inconvenience. It’s about representation, choice, and practical support.

“There’s a real need for more variety in larger sizes: supportive, stylish, and affordable bras that complement the beauty of busty women,” she said.

Despite the challenges, Agiri has come to confidently embrace her body and curves.

Pain amplified by menstrual cycle

Abimbola Olusola, 28, a National Youth Service Corps member with a triple D bust, explained how wearing the wrong bra worsens her pain during ovulation and menstruation.

“During these periods, my boobs become fuller, heavier, and more sensitive. Any pressure from the wrong bra amplifies the pain, as it can even feel like it’s reaching my head,” she said.

Olusola also noted that certain movements, including intimate activity with her fiancé, can trigger discomfort if her breasts are unsupported.

“The pain is bearable. Many people don’t understand the daily struggle women with big boobs face,” the corps member added.
