A 25-year-old University of Jos graduate, Ibrahim Mbaya, has been beaten to death by three suspects who accused him of stealing an iPhone 12 during a sleepover at an off-campus apartment in Jos, with the Plateau State Police Command arresting all three suspects after a viral video captured the assault.
He stayed the night because it was too late to go home. He never made it back.
Ibrahim Mbaya, a 25-year-old University of Jos graduate popularly known as “Ibee,” was beaten to death by suspects who accused him of stealing an iPhone 12 from an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos on Sunday.
As reported by Daily Trust, Mbaya had attended a social event on campus before deciding to spend the night at a friend’s residence because it was too late to return to his home in Rayfield. The following morning, his hosts claimed an iPhone had gone missing and, identifying him as the prime suspect, subjected him to a savage beating that proved fatal.
A viral video of the incident showed suspects assaulting Mbaya with planks and canes and subjecting him to sustained punishment. He was brought to Jos University Teaching Hospital in an unconscious state by youths under suspicious circumstances and was confirmed dead on arrival.
Three suspects have since been arrested — Rinji Daniel Fwanji, 25, Emmanuel Newyear, 30, and Nensemka Fwanji, 22. Plateau State Police Command spokesperson SP Alabo Alfred confirmed that Newyear was captured in the viral video wielding a large wooden plank against the deceased and was also identified in photographs obtained during the investigation.
“In the course of interviewing the suspects, they revealed that the victim was suspected to have stolen an iPhone 12 and rather than reporting the matter to law enforcement agencies, the suspects took the law into their own hands,” SP Alfred stated.
The command strongly condemned the act of jungle justice, reminding residents that Nigeria’s Administration of Criminal Justice System guarantees every suspect the right to due process under the law.
The three suspects are currently being held at the Plateau State Criminal Investigation Department as investigations continue.
