Bandits who attacked Dansarai community in Katsina State killed four residents but were repelled by villagers and vigilantes who killed four of the attackers and forced the rest to flee, leaving eight residents injured.
The bandits picked the wrong village this time.
Armed attackers who invaded Dansarai, a farming community in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, on Tuesday met fierce resistance from residents determined not to go down without a fight. According to residents who spoke to Daily Trust, the attackers stormed the community on motorcycles armed with sophisticated weapons, including AK-47 rifles, opening fire indiscriminately as they entered.
“They were shooting sporadically as they entered the village. Four of our people were killed instantly,” an eyewitness recounted.
But the bandits didn’t get the easy victory they expected. Enraged by the killings, Dansarai residents, backed by local vigilantes, mobilised swiftly and fought back — turning the tables on the assailants.
“Our people stood up to defend themselves. In the confrontation, four of the bandits were neutralised, and the rest were forced to flee,” another resident said, adding that the attackers abandoned their original plan to rustle livestock and loot shops and homes.
The clash left eight residents injured, some with gunshot wounds. A community source said the victims were rushed to nearby health facilities and are responding to treatment. “Some sustained gunshot wounds, while others were injured in the chaos, but they are responding to treatment,” the source said.
Adding to residents’ frustration, distress calls to security agencies reportedly went unanswered throughout the attack. “We kept calling for help, but nobody came. We were left to face the situation on our own,” a community leader lamented.
According to Daily Trust,In the aftermath, residents of Dansarai and neighbouring communities are appealing to both state and federal governments for a stronger security presence in the area. “This area has become a soft target for bandits. We need a permanent security presence to protect our lives and livelihoods,” one resident said.
The eastern part of Malumfashi LGA remains one of the worst-hit banditry hotspots in Katsina’s Funtua zone.
