Dangote refinery’s push to end fuel imports has sparked a legal and industry standoff with marketers warning of supply disruptions.
Aliko Dangote is facing renewed opposition from fuel marketers over imports, according to Business Insider Africa.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has filed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate import licences issued to marketers and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company. It argues the refinery can meet domestic demand and should be protected from “distortive” imports.
However, the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria warned that cancelling licences could destabilise supply and undermine competition. “These licences exist to protect fuel supply, not to disadvantage any single producer,” the group said.
DAPPMAN added, “What we do not accept is that a private refinery’s commercial interests should override a regulator’s mandate.”
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions over Nigeria’s fuel supply structure despite efforts to reduce reliance on imports.
