President Bola Tinubu has directed the FCCPC to investigate Google, Meta, X and generative AI platforms over alleged anti-competitive practices and unlawful use of Nigerian media content.
TINUBU ORDERS FCCPC PROBE OF GOOGLE, META, X OVER MEDIA CONTENT
The directive followed a joint petition submitted to the Presidency by the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), representing the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers.
According to Daily Post, Director of Corporate Affairs Ondaje Ijagwu, the investigation targets Meta, Alphabet and X, along with certain generative AI platforms operating in Nigeria. The commission will determine whether their conduct breaches the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018, or any other Nigerian law.
Petitioners allege the platforms commercially benefit from Nigerian news content without adequate compensation, threatening the financial sustainability of local media organisations and undermining the rights of publishers and content creators.
FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello said the commission would carry out an independent, transparent and evidence-based investigation, adding that the inquiry carries no presumption of wrongdoing against any of the named companies.
