Atiku Abubakar says the Tinubu administration’s new decentralised power policy merely confirms an idea he championed over two decades ago, while accusing the government of raising tariffs before fixing the system.
Atiku Says Tinubu’s Power Plan Is His 21-Year-Old Idea
Atiku Abubakar isn’t holding back. According to Tribune Online, the former Vice President says the Tinubu government’s admission that Nigeria can’t rely on centralised power plants is nothing new — it’s a policy he’s pushed since 2005.
In a statement via his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku recalled rejecting the chairmanship of Obasanjo’s gas-focused Power Sector Reform Committee because he believed in a diversified energy mix instead. He blasted the current administration for hiking electricity tariffs before implementing structural reforms, calling it “poor planning and misplaced priorities.”
Atiku said an ADC government under him would pursue power generation driven by hydro, gas, solar, and stronger transmission and distribution networks, with private sector involvement to ensure stable supply.
