In Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos, after 31 years in power, altered the constitution in 2010 to abolish direct presidential elections, consolidating his rule. Similarly, in Togo, Faure Gnassingbe, upon his father’s death in 2005, has navigated through constitutional changes to remain in power, most recently abolishing executive presidency in 2024.
Zimbabwe’s Emmerson Mnangagwa has also consolidated power, extending his tenure and altering the constitution to allow for longer terms and parliamentary selection of the president, effectively paving the way for a life presidency.
