The Court of Appeal has overturned a ruling that permitted Muslim students at the International School, University of Ibadan, to wear hijab as school uniform, according to The PUNCH.
The three-member panel ruled two-to-one that the Supreme Court’s hijab judgment applies only to public schools, not private institutions like ISI. The case followed a suit by 11 students, backed by the Muslim Rights Concern, who argued the ban violated their rights.
The court held that students voluntarily agreed to the school’s dress code upon enrolment. One judge dissented, saying the appeal lacked merit and should have been dismissed.
