The APC says it will not bar members from contesting its 2027 presidential ticket despite endorsing President Tinubu for a second term.
The All Progressives Congress has said it will not stop any interested member from contesting its 2027 presidential ticket, despite the party’s adoption of President Bola Tinubu for a second term. The Deputy National Organising Secretary of the party, Chidi Duru, said the APC remained open to aspirants willing to test their popularity within the party.
“It is not that we are likely, we will have a consensus. That is an indication of the APC being a democratic party. But should it happen that there is a member of the party who would like to throw his hat in the ring? He is more than welcome,” Duru said. He added that incumbent leaders often enjoy an advantage when seeking re-election if party members are satisfied with their performance.
He explained that the principle of “right of first refusal” encourages performance among elected officials and helps parties present credible candidates. Duru’s remarks come ahead of the APC national convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026, in Abuja, where the party has reaffirmed its zoning arrangement for key leadership positions to maintain internal balance.
