The family of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, is demanding an apology and compensation from the Federal Government over his 1966 killing.
Aguiyi-Ironsi’s Family Demands Compensation, Apology 58 Years On
Nearly six decades later, the wounds haven’t healed. Speaking to Arise News, per PUNCH, family head Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi demanded a “sincere apology” and compensation for his uncle’s death, describing him as a “detribalized” and visionary leader wrongly punished for a coup he had no part in.
He noted Aguiyi-Ironsi served as Head of State for just six months before he was killed on July 29, 1966, alongside his host, Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, in the northern-led July counter-coup. According to the family, his position as most senior officer — not any wrongdoing — cost him his life. He expressed hope his appeal reaches those with power to act.
