The Local Government Inspector (LGI) of the NYSC in Abeokuta South, Abbas Olalekan, has been arraigned in court following the tragic death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, after an alleged botched abortion attempt involving a romantic relationship.
A high-ranking official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abbas Olalekan, was formally arraigned before an Isabo Magistrate Court in Abeokuta on Monday, March 23, 2026. Olalekan, the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and the unlawful attempt to procure an abortion. The prosecution, led by Inspector Lawrence Olu-Balogun, alleges that between January and March 2026, the defendant supplied drugs to terminate a pregnancy in the Ikereku area of Laderin. The LGI, who resides in the Mosafueto area of Oke-Ata, entered a plea of not guilty to all charges brought against him.
The legal proceedings follow the deeply distressing death of Victoria Ariyo, a female corps member serving under Olalekan’s direct supervision in Abeokuta South. Ariyo reportedly passed away last Tuesday due to severe pregnancy-related complications. Sources close to the investigation claim that the LGI was involved in an inappropriate romantic relationship with the deceased, which allegedly resulted in the pregnancy. It is further alleged that the attempt to terminate the pregnancy led to the medical crisis that claimed the young woman’s life, sparking outrage among fellow corps members and the wider Ogun State community.
During the Monday morning session, the court heard that the defendant’s actions constituted a grave breach of his position of authority over the youth under his care. While the defense is expected to argue for bail, the tragedy has cast a somber shadow over the NYSC orientation and service year in Ogun State. The presiding magistrate has adjourned the case to a later date for the commencement of trial, as the police continue to gather forensic evidence and witness statements regarding the timeline of the alleged drug procurement.
