Northern stakeholders divided over Obi’s one-term presidency proposal

Political stakeholders across Northern Nigeria have expressed divided opinions over Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

Political opinion across Northern Nigeria remains divided over the promise by Peter Obi to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

Obi recently reiterated that he would spend only four years in office “even at gun point,” after the National Democratic Congress zoned its presidential ticket to the South and the vice-presidential slot to the North.

While some northern stakeholders described the pledge as a strategic move to reassure the region, others questioned its credibility and constitutional enforceability.

Political analyst Murtala Abubakar described the promise as “a political gimmick designed to secure electoral sympathy.”

However, Obi supporter Ibrahim Hussaini Abdulkarin defended the proposal, saying, “We remain optimistic because we believe Peter Obi is a man of integrity who will keep his promise.”

Analysts said the proposal’s success may depend on support from influential northern political figures ahead of 2027.
