Two soldiers and scores of ISWAP fighters were killed on Thursday during a failed dawn attack on a military Forward Operating Base in Magumeri, Borno State.
At least two soldiers and an unspecified number of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters have been killed following a fierce encounter at a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Magumeri, Borno State. The attack, which occurred on Thursday morning, May 7, 2026, saw terrorists attempting to infiltrate the facility under the cover of poor visibility. Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for Headquarters Joint Task Force, Sector 3, confirmed that while the insurgents managed a minor breach of an isolated section of the base, troops fought gallantly to decisively contain and defeat the assault.
The military reported that the terrorists suffered significant losses, with many bodies and extensive blood trails discovered during a subsequent mop-up operation of the general area. Beyond the fatalities, the troops successfully recovered a substantial cache of weaponry abandoned by the fleeing insurgents, including PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, several AK-47 rifles, and magazines. “It is important to state that further exploitation of the general area revealed extensive blood trails, body drags and the recovery of terrorist corpses, confirming the heavy casualties inflicted on the attackers during the failed assault,” Lieutenant Colonel Uba stated.
Despite the tactical victory, the engagement resulted in casualties within the military ranks and damage to the base’s infrastructure. Two soldiers lost their lives in the battle, while an officer and other personnel who sustained injuries are currently in stable condition receiving medical treatment. “Regrettably, 2 gallant soldiers paid the supreme price in the course of the battle, while an officer and other wounded personnel are currently stable and receiving appropriate medical attention. Additionally, some equipment was damaged by fire during the engagement as well as temporary structures which caught fire during the intense battle,” the statement concluded.
