Man seeks divorce, says wife’s lover slapped, tried to run him over with his car twice

A man has asked an Ibadan customary court to end his marriage, alleging infidelity and threats to his life involving his wife’s alleged lover.

A man identified as Tijani has asked a Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, to dissolve his union with his wife, Nafisatu, citing alleged infidelity, threats to his life and irreconcilable differences.

The plaintiff told the court that his wife was quarrelsome, failed to show him care and engaged in extramarital affairs that led to the breakdown of their relationship. He alleged that one of Nafisatu’s lovers slapped him publicly and later attempted to hit him with a car, prompting him to leave the marriage. Tijani also sought custody of their children, arguing that the defendant was not a suitable role model. In his testimony, he said, “I met my wife in 2009, and she became pregnant during our courtship. She later moved in with me, even though I did not pay her bride price or perform any marital rites… My lord, she also betrayed my trust by engaging in affairs with other men.”

Nafisatu reportedly consented to the divorce when the case was first mentioned but opposed her husband’s bid for custody of the children, though she was absent on later adjourned dates. In addition to seeking custody, Tijani urged the court to restrict the defendant from encroaching on his privacy as proceedings continue.
