The factional chairman of the ADC, Nafiu Bala, has declared that the party will disqualify any candidate over the age of 55 from contesting for office to ensure a complete transition to youth-led governance.
Nafiu Bala, the factional National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has announced a controversial new policy barring any politician aged 55 and above from contesting for office under his leadership. Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Bala emphasized that the move is designed to force a generational shift in Nigerian politics and ensure the party belongs to the youth.
Bala argued that veteran politicians have failed the country, suggesting that Nigeria’s future now rests on the energy and “fresh blood” of the younger generation. He stated that the ADC intends to open its doors wide for young people to serve not just as voters, but as primary candidates and decision-makers. According to the chairman, individuals with new ideas are essential to move the party and the nation forward properly.
The announcement comes amidst ongoing internal friction within the ADC, which has been hit by leadership disputes and factional infighting. By implementing this age cap, Bala aims to distinguish his faction’s vision from the “old ways” of doing business. He maintained that the time has come for young people to take the lead, asserting that the party must prioritize those who can offer new energy to the political landscape.
