Abacha more democratic than NADECO activists – Peter Obi

Peter Obi has stirred controversy by claiming Sani Abacha was more democratic than some NADECO activists, amid ongoing tensions within the ADC and INEC’s intervention in party leadership disputes.

Peter Obi has sparked controversy after stating that late military ruler Sani Abacha was “more democratic” than some activists linked to National Democratic Coalition. The former presidential candidate made the remarks in a post on X, criticising individuals he said once championed democracy but now act contrary to those ideals.

Obi’s comments come amid ongoing leadership disputes within the African Democratic Congress, following actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission to delist certain party officials. The electoral body said it would not recognise affected leaders or monitor activities linked to their factions pending court rulings.

Tensions around the crisis prompted a heavy security presence at INEC headquarters in Abuja, where personnel were deployed to prevent clashes between rival protesters. Obi’s remarks have since drawn reactions, reigniting debate over Nigeria’s democratic history and the legacy of past leaders.
