Nigeria has joined other ECOWAS countries in advancing ECOVISA, a proposed single-visa system aimed at simplifying travel and boosting tourism, trade and regional integration across West Africa.
Nigeria has joined several West African nations in advancing the ECOVISA initiative, a proposed single visa system designed to allow foreign nationals travel freely across 12 member states of the Economic Community of West African States. The initiative aims to simplify cross-border travel, promote regional integration and encourage tourism and investment within the region.
ECOWAS officials say the programme, inspired by the European Schengen model, will make it easier for tourists, investors and business travellers to move across participating countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, using a single visa. The bloc said ECOVISA seeks to enhance cooperation among member states and remove bureaucratic barriers that often complicate regional travel.
According to the regional body, “ECOWAS is committed to improving the free movement of people, and ECOVISA is a key element of that plan.” Officials added that the system is expected to stimulate tourism, trade and economic growth by enabling easier movement across destinations such as Lagos, Accra and Dakar.
