El-Rufai made ‘greatest mistake’ by surrendering himself – Dalung

Solomon Dalung says Nasir El-Rufai erred by surrendering to authorities, arguing the corruption case against him lacks solid legal grounds.

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has criticised former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for surrendering himself to security agencies ahead of his trial, describing the move as his “greatest mistake.” Dalung made the remarks during an interview, claiming authorities had earlier attempted to arrest El-Rufai at an airport but failed.

Dalung argued that surrendering weakened El-Rufai’s position, stating that “comrades don’t surrender” in a struggle, as it could lead to humiliation. However, he added that the former governor’s action may have also complicated efforts by authorities to build a case, alleging that investigators lacked sufficient charges at the time of his detention.

El-Rufai was re-arrested by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission after initial detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He has since been arraigned over allegations including inflated severance payments and dollar deposits totalling $817,900, though Dalung insists the case lacks legal foundation.
