UK court jails 24-year-old Nigerian for life

A 24-year-old Nigerian drug dealer, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years and six months for the “horrific and random” murder of Nila Patel in Leicester, UK.

A Nigerian national and former university student, Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, was sentenced to life imprisonment at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, for the murder of 56-year-old Nila Patel. The 24-year-old was ordered to serve a minimum of 21 years and six months before becoming eligible for parole. The sentencing followed a month-long trial where a jury found Ahanonu guilty of murder on Monday, rejecting his partial defense of diminished responsibility. The court heard that Ahanonu, who lived on Dover Street in Leicester, was on license from prison for previous drug and weapon offenses when he launched what investigators described as “the most horrific, violent and random attack by a stranger on a kind, gentle and loving woman.”

The tragic incident occurred on the afternoon of June 24, 2025, after Ahanonu drove erratically from London to Leicester, swerving through traffic and running red lights while nearly four times over the legal driving limit for cannabis. After flipping his BMW onto its roof near the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Ahanonu emerged from the wreckage and targeted Ms. Patel, who had just stepped off a bus and was walking home. Witnesses described a savage unprovoked assault in which Ahanonu punched, kicked, and stamped on the victim’s head, causing a fractured skull and catastrophic brain trauma. Ms. Patel succumbed to her injuries in the hospital two days later, on June 26, 2025.

In addition to the murder conviction, Ahanonu had earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, possession of Class B drugs with intent to supply, and the assault of an emergency worker for biting a female police officer during his arrest. Police recovered three iPhones and dealer bags of cannabis valued at over £3,000 from his vehicle, with the court hearing he maintained a “flashy lifestyle” through a drug-dealing network of over 250 customers. Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Emma Matts, stated: “This was the most horrific, violent and random attack by a stranger on a kind, gentle and loving woman who was simply making her way home. It is hard to imagine what Ms Patel went through in those moments.”
