Nigerian soldier admits stealing N4.9m from victim during robbery operation

A serving soldier of the Nigerian Army has been apprehended and interrogated after allegedly using axes and handcuffs to rob a civilian of nearly ₦5 million in Abia State.

Lance Corporal Chukwu Ebuka, a soldier reportedly attached to the 14 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Ohafia, is currently in military custody following a high-stakes armed robbery in Abia State. According to a viral video obtained by SaharaReporters, Ebuka was apprehended after allegedly dispossessing an unidentified victim of ₦4,999,000. Unlike typical criminal operations, the suspect reportedly utilized a pair of handcuffs to restrain his target and was found in possession of two axes, which were allegedly used to intimidate the victim during the ₦5 million heist

The interrogation video shows a tense confrontation between the suspect and a superior officer. When questioned about his identity and the justification for his actions, Ebuka appeared visibly disoriented, struggling to provide a coherent timeline of his service or a reason for the violent theft. “How did you see what you did?” the superior officer is heard asking, as the soldier stands in a mix of military fatigue and civilian gear. The arrest has sent shockwaves through the 14 Brigade, which has recently been under pressure to maintain discipline amidst a heightened security environment in the South-East.

The Nigerian Army has not yet released a formal statement regarding Ebuka’s specific disciplinary trial, but precedents within the 14 Brigade suggest he faces a summary court-martial and likely dismissal before being handed over to the police for civil prosecution. This incident follows a stern warning issued just last week by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Ahmad M. Dikko, who urged the public and the media to report any acts of misconduct by personnel. As the investigation continues, the military is working to recover the stolen funds and determine if the Lance Corporal was working with a larger syndicate of rogue “axe-men” operating within the region.
