World football governing body FIFA has fined the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Congolese Football Association for fan misconduct during the November 2025 World Cup qualifying playoff, with the DR Congo receiving a heavier penalty for the use of laser pointers.
FIFA has imposed financial sanctions on both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Congolese Football Association following security breaches by supporters during their 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff final last November. In a disciplinary overview released on Monday, March 16, 2026, the world governing body found Nigerian fans guilty of throwing objects onto the pitch during the high-stakes encounter, which DR Congo won on penalties. Consequently, the NFF was handed a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs for violating Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The Congolese federation faced a more severe sanction, receiving a fine of 5,000 Swiss francs after its supporters were found to have targeted players with laser pointers and similar electronic devices. This offense, which contravenes Article 17.2.d of the disciplinary code, was deemed a significant breach of match security and order. FIFA emphasized that these penalties were decided based on the specific merits of the reports from the November 16, 2025, fixture played at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, though it noted that both national associations retain the right to appeal the rulings.
While these fines address the conduct of fans, the summary made no mention of the NFF’s ongoing legal protest regarding the alleged fielding of ineligible players by DR Congo. Nigeria has petitioned FIFA to investigate claims that several overseas-born players featured in the playoff without proper nationality clearance, a case that could theoretically overturn the result and disqualify the Leopards. As DR Congo prepares for the inter-confederation playoffs later this month, the football community continues to wait for a definitive verdict on the Super Eagles’ appeal, which could still alter the final lineup for the 2026 World Cup.
