Tinubu signs amended Electoral Act 2026 into law, says ‘results are finalised by humans not computers’

President Tinubu signed the Electoral Act 2026 into law, stressing that manual voting, human oversight, and integrity are central to credible elections while electronic transmission serves only as a backup.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill into law at the State House, following months of review and debate in the National Assembly. Speaking at the signing, Tinubu emphasised that “no matter how good a system is, it’s managed by the people, promoted by the people, and result is finalised by the people,” underscoring that human integrity remains central to the electoral process. He clarified that voting will continue to be manual, with ballots sorted and counted physically, while electronic transmission of results will serve only as a supplementary measure.

Tinubu also highlighted the need for realistic assessment of Nigeria’s technological capacity and stressed the importance of preventing confusion or disenfranchisement, saying, “What is crucial is the fact that you manage the process to the extent there will be no confusion, no disenfranchisement of Nigerians; and we are all going to see democracy flourish.” The signing follows amendments to address concerns over the 2027 election timetable and debates on electronic result transmission.
