APC faction demands halt to Fubara’s impeachment, calls it “affront” to Tinubu’s peace deal

A prominent group within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern condemnation of the impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, urging the National Assembly to immediately intervene.

The APC Progressive Mandate Group, in a statement on Thursday, described the move by the Rivers State House of Assembly as “fundamentally flawed,” politically motivated, and a direct challenge to the authority of President Bola Tinubu, who personally mediated a peace agreement between the governor and his political adversaries last year.

The group, led by Ayodele Alonge, explicitly accused allies of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike of driving the impeachment in an act of “political sabotage” that threatens to destabilise the state. It argued that the governor’s recent defection to the APC has strengthened the party, making the impeachment an effort to undermine both the President’s reconciliation and the party’s gains.

“To attempt to unravel that agreement now is not only irresponsible, it is a direct challenge to the authority and wisdom of the President himself,” the statement read, demanding an immediate halt to the process and an apology to President Tinubu.
