FUTA Teaching Hospital begins operations after FG–Ondo deal

The Federal Government and Ondo State have finalised the transfer of UNIMED Teaching Hospital, Akure, to establish the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH).

The Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH) has officially commenced operations following the transfer of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) Teaching Hospital, Akure complex, to the Federal Government.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, described the development as a major stride in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. “This transformation will reshape the health landscape of Ondo State and Nigeria in the areas of training, research, and clinical services,” he said.

Pate noted that FUTATH would integrate technology and research to strengthen Nigeria’s tertiary healthcare and human capital development. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, said the move would bring “superior funding, equipment procurement, personnel recruitment, and research collaborations.”

Chief Medical Director Prof. Olusegun Sylvester Ojo said the hospital would offer advanced medical services, training, and research, calling it “the dawn of a new era for healthcare in Ondo State.”

The event ended with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding and the unveiling of the hospital complex.
