Rescuers find hunter alive after intense two-day search in Rawah Wilderness

A missing Illinois hunter survived two nights in Colorado’s Rawah Wilderness by staying calm and using survival skills until rescuers found him.

A 57-year-old hunter from Illinois was found alive after surviving two nights in the Rawah Wilderness of Colorado during an intense early-season snowstorm.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) said the man went missing on Sept. 22 after getting separated from his group. The last communication came around 3:21 p.m. when he reported being lost. He had military experience and was equipped with warm clothing, a sleeping bag, and water.

Rescue efforts were delayed due to darkness and dangerous weather. “Searchers faced snowy, cold, and windy conditions, and air support was unavailable due to the weather,” officials said. After hours of searching, operations were suspended until the following day.

On Sept. 24, the hunter managed to make several 911 calls, and around 1 p.m. he was located alive. “He was found to be in good health and credited his survival to staying calm, starting a fire, and using his sleeping bag and clothing to stay warm,” the JCSO noted.

Authorities praised the teamwork of multiple agencies, adding that their dedication was vital in achieving a safe conclusion.
