Oregon sues Trump over ‘unlawful’ troop deployment in Portland

Oregon and Portland sued President Trump to block his National Guard deployment, calling it unconstitutional and unnecessary.

The state of Oregon filed a federal lawsuit Sunday to block President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops to Portland. The suit, joined by the city, claims Trump “trampled” the Constitution by federalizing 200 Guard members for a 60-day mission.

“Our nation’s founders recognized that military rule—particularly by a remote authority indifferent to local needs—was incompatible with liberty and democracy,” the filing stated.

Governor Tina Kotek (D) condemned Trump’s move, saying, “There is no insurrection. There is no threat to national security, and there is no need for military troops in our major city.” Portland Mayor Keith Wilson (D) added, “The number of necessary troops is zero, in Portland and any other American city.”

Trump, in a Truth Social post, said he was sending troops at the request of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to protect “war ravaged” Portland and ICE facilities. He also authorized “Full Force, if necessary.”

Attorney General Dan Rayfield called the deployment unwarranted, insisting the state is “stable.”
