The United Igbo Elders Council says Nnamdi Kanu’s health is at a “critical point” and calls for his release.
The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has raised concern over the deteriorating health of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order his immediate release.
In a statement signed by Justice Alpha Ikpeama, UNIEC said Kanu’s continued detention violates both Nigerian and international court rulings. “On September 17, 2025, his lawyers revealed that he is battling dangerously low potassium levels and other complications that could trigger heart failure,” the group stated.
UNIEC accused the government of double standards, citing the release of Sunday Igboho and Sheikh El-Zakzaky. “Unity must not only be in theory; it must be reflected in practice,” the statement added.
The elders called on Ohanaeze, governors, and civil society to demand Kanu’s freedom, warning: “Today it is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu; tomorrow it could be any one of us.”
