UK bans over 100 jobs from foreign recruitment to curb migration

The UK has banned foreign recruitment for over 100 occupations in a bid to cut migration, sparking concerns of worsening labour shortages.

The United Kingdom has barred more than 100 occupations from being filled by foreign workers in a sweeping policy aimed at cutting net migration. The Home Office announced the restrictions on Saturday via a statement on X, stressing the move was designed to prioritize British workers and restructure the visa system.

“More than 100 occupations are no longer eligible for overseas recruitment – opening up more jobs for British workers. A fairer, skills-focused system is now taking shape,” the statement read.

The new measures form part of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s broader migration reforms since taking office on July 5, 2024, after Labour’s landslide victory. While the government argues the policy will create opportunities for citizens, critics warn it could intensify labour shortages, particularly in health and social care.

The Home Office has yet to publish the full list of affected jobs. PUNCH Online reports that more details are expected in the coming days.
