Tinubu scraps 5% telecom levy in new tax law – NCC

President Tinubu has scrapped the 5% telecom levy, a move expected to reduce consumer costs and support growth in Nigeria’s telecom sector.

President Bola Tinubu has permanently removed the 5 per cent excise duty on telecommunications services under Nigeria’s new tax laws, the Nigerian Communications Commission confirmed on Tuesday.

NCC Executive Vice-Chairman, Dr Aminu Maida, told journalists in Abuja that the levy, which was suspended in 2023, has now been scrapped. “The excise duty, it was the 5 per cent or so, that is no longer there,” he said. “The president has been magnanimous to remove it entirely.”

The levy, introduced in 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, faced strong opposition over its impact on consumers. Maida noted the decision would ease cost pressures on subscribers and encourage wider industry growth.
