Kemi Badenoch recounts ‘prison-like’ school, criticises Nigeria

It’s important to talk about where you come from, even when it makes people uncomfortable.

British Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has shared harrowing details of her childhood education in Nigeria, describing her former boarding school as akin to a prison.

Reflecting on the experience, Badenoch said “that was like being in prison.” She recounted a daily routine devoid of basic comforts: “There was no running water, we fetched it with buckets.” She also remembered waking up before dawn to perform hard labour, including cutting grass with machetes.

Raised in Nigeria until her mid‑teens, Badenoch contrasted the harsh conditions of her schooling with her later life in the UK, where she has lived since age 16. Her remarks are part of broader criticisms she has previously made about corruption and governance during her upbringing in Nigeria.

At times, her statements have sparked controversy. Notably, Nigerian officials—including the vice‑president—have publicly challenged Badenoch’s portrayal of the country. Despite the tension, her spokesperson maintains she is focused on her role in British politics, not serving as Nigeria’s PR representative.
